Individuation > individuation is theprocess of creating an identity very peculiar and very specific, which makes people an individual having unique personality. This drive to create distinctive identity is seen among every man. A desire to produce a character distinctive from common man is inherent among many. And I think it is one of the most fundamental drives among humans. My concern here is to show how this drive is manifested among many, directly and indirectly.
One always tries to build a personality which would help one to secure a distinct mark in society. In Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs; social recognition is one of the fundamental needs which come when basic drives or needs are fulfilled. But recognition can only be achieved when there is some distinctiveness or peculiarity in personality to be recognised. The more easy recognition becomes when the more peculiar the personality becomes. This is an observable fact that recognition depends upon degree of distinctiveness from context. So in order to get a distinct identity man tries to attain some top slot or skill/arts which will make him different from his fellow beings in particular social settings.
Man is a political/social animal, such was said by Aristotle. But what for society is needed? Society shapes man and brings what was hidden in the man- a personality. Society prepares personality of a man; without society personality cannot emerge. For emergence of personality clearly two factors are important. One is the internal trait and other one is the social influence. Society helps the man to bring what traits were inherent within man; it helps in actualization of inner potentiality of man.
As we know inequality is the most common characteristic of nature that is no two things in nature is created alike. Nature loves diversity; it diversifies every species with as much combination as possible. In this manner it also provides men with different internal trait. Perhaps this explains why two people differ even when they were raised alike. And as were argued above that social settings helps the personality to evolve in the same manner as the soil helps the seed to become a plant, so different traits when applied to same social settings or different social settings gives rise to different combination of personality, as a result different results.
Anyhow whether by man internal motivation or by social settings or by different internal traits, diverse and dissimilar personality emerges. This helps making individuals, INDIVIDUALS.
